This Hebmüller was found in south London by Bob Shaill. Bob restored the car over several years. He also startet the Hebmüller Registry in the early seventies. Thanks for your great work Bob! (CM)
He found the car after an info that a vw convertible was sitting in a field in London and that it has to be cleared in one day for the Chrystal palace stadion. That was early 1990.
The chassis was already a later one under the car and beyond repair. Bob found a 49 chassis and used documents from a 49 split beetle with chassis 1-098406 and restored that one to put under the car. Bob did a good work to restore it with the parts that were available on that time period in the 80’s. However Bob did not finish the car and sold it in primer paint to another collector in the UK.
He finished the car into a driver and showed it of on the Volksworld show. Shortly after that show it was sold to the current owner.
As for the real Identity of the car, it is known since decades as Hebmuller 14-00584. In the past Bob Shaill was not able to find the correct ID for the chassis but never registered it. He claimed it was known in old records as 1-144362 but that nr is not verified in the Volkswagen archives. IAfter investigating and discussed with him, he said he found no proof and was a guess calculated from other known cars.
As the car was in bad shape, some parts were replaced with was available. So the rear part does not have an inspection hatch in the back above the gear box. But doors were New Old Stock split doors, as the front inner panels and many more, the Hebmuller specific parts were restored or replaced with exact copy’s with patterns from the original ones .(PS)
